Cartama is situated in the Guadalhorce region in the province of Malaga on the Costa del Sol.The town is divided into Cartama Pueblo and Cartama Estacion and has some of the best archaeological sites in the province with the discovery of ceramics, Roman coins and columns, metals and walls. It is situated at the foot of two small mountains: the Espartales and Llana which form the Sierra de Cartama.
The town is on an agricultural plain surrounded by orange, olive and almond groves and vegetable plots.There is a crocodile park which is home to more than 300 of the species including the massive Giant of the Nile called Big Nose who is over seventy years old and measures almost five metres long. A local development plan has just been approved for Cartama which will improve the road network, with the construction of a major new link between Cartama Pueblo and Estacion de Cartama, and a reduction in the traffic congestion on the main Alhaurin and Coin roads.The building of a sports centre, commercial and leisure areas have also been given the go ahead.
